When punishment hits the “soul”: loneliness as a manifestation of symbolic death in total institutions in Brazil

One of the characteristics of total institutions is to put certain individuals in touch with their loneliness and isolation. Assuming that the “I” only exists from the other, the segregation proposed by total institutions presents a kind of symbolic death of the “I”. To guide the analytical approach, this article examines the possible relationship between loneliness and the symbolic death of the individual, exploring how loneliness can be considered a manifestation of total institutions. To achieve this objective, the research seeks to analyze the theories of sociologists such as Erving Goffman and Hannah Arendt to investigate the intersection of these concepts and provide insights into the psychosocial impact of loneliness in institutional contexts. In the first analysis, the study reveals that loneliness can, in fact, be a consequence of institutional practices that undermine individuals' identity and social connection, thus causing the symbolic death of the “self”. Methodologically, the research uses the hypothetical-deductive approach, starting from premises that are embodied in the problem. The monograph is used in the procedure, and the research technique is bibliographic.
