Sexual torture in prisons: traces of permanence and critics perspectives of confronting

Prison violence manifests in various contexts, whether through degrading structural conditions or acts perpetrated by state agents. This article aims to analyze the historical persistence of sexual torture in prisons, seeking to understand how the culture of forgetting has contributed to its continuity. It intends to outline critical approaches to confronting torture through the abandonment of the prison model and the promotion of human rights education as a means to expose both historical and daily violence, and to foster social awareness in addressing the vulnerabilities produced by incarceration. The study examines the landscape of sexual torture in Brazilian prisons, as well as the everyday occurrence of such violations. It concludes by exploring the relationship between the culture of forgetting and the vulnerability vectors underlying acts of sexual violence—namely, racism and patriarchy—thereby characterizing the ongoing nature of this atrocity. Additionally, it proposes strategies of resistance rooted in a break with the dictatorial past, through a critique of incarceration and the advancement of human rights education. The article employs a deductive method, literature review, and qualitative analysis of both official data and sources produced by civil society.
