“Intellectuals, Discourses, and Platforms: AI, Digital Humanities, and the Public Sphere in Latin America”

Prof. Dr. Rafael Laguardia (Universidade Salgado de Oliveira)
Prof. Dr. Rafael Dias de Castro (Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros)

This dossier aims to bring together reflections that investigate how intellectuals in the humanities produce and contest discourses within a platformized public sphere, mediated by AI and/or digital infrastructures. We seek to connect the History of Ideas, discourse analysis, and Digital Humanities in order to reflect on fundamental issues within these narratives, such as evidence, authorship, authority, source criticism, circulation, truth, and ethics, among other questions linked to these new spaces.

In this sense, we invite contributions that:
(1) historicize AI in humanities research, situating it within the broader trajectory of computational methods;
(2) examine, from the perspective of discourse production, issues of ethics, bias, and algorithmic transparency (authorship, plagiarism, responsibility);
(3) analyze the formation of critical thinking and the teaching of the Humanities with AI;
(4) critically explore digital sources, methods, and possibilities (text, image, sound; close/distant reading; reproducibility, open data);
(5) discuss the digital public sphere, algorithmic mediation, and the role of intellectuals;
(6) identify possibilities and limitations of new technological resources in light of social diversity and inequality; among other related issues.

Scientific articles, theoretical essays, case studies involving collections, and methodological or thematic proposals are welcome, especially those that explore underlying narrative dimensions in the humanities and their interactions with different approaches to artificial intelligence, focusing on reflections that encompass Brazil as well as other Latin American countries.

Suggested thematic axes:

(a) Intellectuals and digital mediation;
(b) Ethics, authorship, and plagiarism in AI;
(c) Teaching the Humanities with AI;
(d) Digital methods (textual/visual/multimodal);
(e) Public sphere, circulation, and controversy;
(f) Possibilities and limitations of digital methodologies;
(g) Discourse production, circulation, and evidence.

Submission deadline: January 30, 2026
Expected publication: July 2026
