Circulation of Far-Right Ideas in Digital Environments in Latin America

International scholarship on intellectuals and the circulation of far-right ideas has highlighted, over the past decade, the importance of digital environments as a means of political and intellectual engagement for these groups. Authors such as Cas Mudde, Odilon Caldeira, Tiana Gaudette, and Wendy Brown have emphasized how the dissemination of ideas associated with ethnic nationalism, anti-immigration agendas, and the defense of a nostalgic view of the historical past has gained strength in Europe and the United States, particularly following events such as the Brexit referendum and the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

This scholarship underscores the relevance of discussions on forums such as Reddit, as well as the emergence of influencers on Instagram and YouTube who have come to claim the role of intellectuals on social media, shaping public debate. These actors tend to criticize knowledge produced by history and the social sciences as ideological, contrasting it with discourses that claim to be neutral.

This dossier seeks to contribute to this research agenda through studies focused on Latin America. It aims to bring together articles that analyze the reception, circulation, and appropriation of far-right political languages beyond the Global North.

We welcome articles that, using the internet as a source, address topics such as the role of the religious right in political and intellectual disputes on the internet; historical denialism and revisionism concerning topics such as fascism, communism, and European colonization in the Americas; discourses on race and racial mixture; gender and violence against women; nationalism and the place of Latin America within Western culture; as well as other topoi of far-right thought in the contemporary world.
