Differences in the social representations of youth regarding urban violence

This study analyzed the social representations that young people from a medium-sized city have about urban violence and the factors that contribute to these representations. Data were collected from the Military Police, the Center for the Promotion of Sustainable Development, and responses to a questionnaire administered to 618 young individuals. The results revealed significant differences in representations of violence among the youth, influenced by their residential areas within the city, economic class, and proximity to incidents of violence. Additionally, it was found that young people's representations are not always based on objective data about violence but are shaped by narratives transmitted by the media, comments from others, and perceptions about the actions of security forces. It was concluded that social representations of urban violence among youth not only reflect reality but also reinforce fears and stereotypes that may intensify socio-spatial segregation and limit the use of public spaces. Therefore, it is essential to invest in strategies for transparent communication, inclusive public policies, and educational actions that promote a more critical and balanced understanding of urban reality, contributing to a safer and more integrated coexistence.
