Abstract

This article's general objective is to explore the potential for dialogue between the right to the city, with Henri Lefèbvre as its main reference, and the area of Communication. To achieve this objective, we chose a case study within the audiovisual reception, namely, the Copa das Monas watch party, held weekly in the Central-East region of Belo Horizonte, between September and November 2023, during the airing of the reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race Brasil. The methods used during the investigative journey were a bibliographical review, with an emphasis on the literature about RuPaul’s Drag Race and the urban space of the capital of Minas Gerais, field research at watch parties in different Brazilian states and a semi-structured interview with Aquarela, the drag queen organizer of the event. After analysis, we identified three particularities in the Copa das Monas: the importance of the public space for the party and the way it took place; a certain distance from the glamor that marks the program and the face-to-face activities linked to it; and a radical departure from the camp capitalism of the franchise led by RuPaul. The text contributes to new approaches to the right to the city.
