Objective: The humanistic approach to innovation, adopted here as a means of improving people's lives and their relationship with nature and the city, is used in this article with the aim of analyzing how legislation in Brazil and France on plastics for use single (PDU) compare, especially in the context of the Paris 2024 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics, and how this relates to the Right to the City.
Method: This study adopts a literature review methodology, comparative analysis, providing a legal view on strategies to reduce the use of plastic and its environmental implications for the city. Therefore, the methodology used is analytical description, observing the different positions in the application of the legal instruments in question.
Results: The results indicate that the ban on PDU at the Paris 2024 Olympics represents a significant advance towards more sustainable practices, in line with the principles of the Right to the City. Such effects transcend the sporting event and can make it a catalyst for environmental innovation and an example to be followed, especially when organizing large events.
Final contributions: From this section, we intend to present how major international events, such as the Olympics, can influence environmental policies that promote significant innovation for the development of more inclusive and sustainable cities. Among these mega-events, the Covid-19 pandemic occurred, which not only boosted innovations, but also placed new environmental issues at the top of the discussion agenda, such as the harmful consequences for the environment resulting from the use of PDUs.
