This work aims to address the foundational dimensions of Classical Conservatism based on Edmund Burke’s criticism of French revolutionarism. Burke’s writings can be considered as the starting point of Conservatism precisely because they manifest the general guiding principles to this political orientation based on the imperatives of preservation, moderation, prudence and gradual reforms. Rejecting abstract theories or idealized projects of social transformation, Burke defended the observance of tradition, admitting the limits of human rationality and valuing collective knowledge built over time. Society can’t be reinvented from scratch, but as a living organism, it contains within itself the experience, habits, customs and prudence of many generations. This study, based on the historical-critical methodology and bibliographical research intended to elucidate the main aspects of Conservatism: traditionalism, organicism and political skepticism.
