THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHER IN TRAINING AND THE DEMANDS OF DIGITAL CULTURE

Abstract

The current society, known as digital culture, has required distinct skills in social communicative practices that are constantly mediated by digital technologies. Considering that teachers, and schools in their role as educational institutions, cannot neglect these needs, it is important to observe how future teachers perceive their training to work in digital culture. Given the context under discussion this study aimed to investigate the positions presented by undergraduate students in English language about their knowledge and practices for the pedagogical use of digital technologies. This qualitative research-training study used the concepts of digital culture (Santaella, 2013; Baratto e Crespo, 2013) and teacher training (Gatti et al., 2019; Freire e Leffa, 2013) as its fundamental theoretical framework. The locus of the study was an online course focused on the use of digital technologies and English teaching. The results showed that teachers in training consider it extremely important to incorporate digital technologies into their future practices and throughout their undergraduate studies, requiring a training process that prepares them for the pedagogical use of these resources.

Keila Mendes dos Santos possui graduação em Letras Língua Inglesa e Literaturas pela Universidade do Estado da Bahia - UNEB. Especialização em Inglês como Língua Estrangeira pela Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia - UESB. Mestrado em Letras: Cultura, Educação e Linguagens pela mesma instituição. Doutorado em Educação pela Universidade Federal de Alagoas, UFAL. É professora adjunta na Universidade do Estado da Bahia - UNEB, atuando no curso de Letras Língua Inglesa e Literaturas. Tem interesse em estudos que abordem a formação do docente de língua inglesa, Crenças sobre aprendizagem de línguas e pesquisas que tratem da utilização das tecnologias digitais da informação e comunicação no processo ensino/ aprendizagem.
