Abstract

The aim of this study is to reflect on the processes used in the administrative reports of the then mayor Graciliano Ramos, when City Manager of the Alagoas city of Palmeiras dos Índios, in the light of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistic (LSF) theory. The reports under analysis (two) were the only ones produced by Graciliano himself and that point it was already possible to glimpse a writer (unpublished until then). These reports were written in 1929 and 1930, referring to Mayor Graciliano Ramos' two-year term in office (1928 and 1929 respectively). The theoretical contribution based on the LSF focuses on the ideational metafunction of language, based on the field context variable, within the transitivity system. The analysis was based on the discussion of processes used in these two reports, endorsed by the theoretical-methodological proposal based on the principles of the LSF, under the auspices of a qualitative study, with an interpretive basis. The analyzes revealed a peculiar saying from the author of the reports, beyond the objective of the analyzed genre. The uses of the highlighted processes showed two strategies in the Alagoan author's writing: i) he seeks to protect himself from criticism regarding his management; ii) is critical of the gestures of people linked to the current and previous management, functioning as a type of denunciation. It is understood, therefore, that the writings analyzed, although presupposing a more technical writing, come closer to the molds of literary writing, thanks to the writing skill present, without neglecting, however, the objective of the genre in question.
