Abstract

Nominal agreement is one of the critical areas of Portuguese in Angola, and the lack of number harmony between the elements that constitute a syntagm, for example, has already been pointed out as one of the most salient characteristics of this variety. This study is an excerpt from a research project in which we sought to identify patterns of nominal agreement in 120 first-cycle secondary school students in Lubango, Southern Angola, to verify the influence of some extralinguistic factors on these patterns. We are interested here in presenting specifically the results relating to the influence of the informants' L1 on the realization of agreement. Thus, although the results often presented in the literature on the subject point in the opposite direction, statistical analysis of the data collected through elicitation of sentences using images and a writing exercise revealed no statistical significance between the productions of students who spoke only Portuguese and those who had a Bantu language as their L1 or those who were early bilinguals.
