Abstract

Objective: to analyze nurses’ understanding about the concept of politics and to discuss the political participation of this professional group in advocating for improvements at work. Method: a descriptive and qualitative study conducted with 46 nurses enrolled in the graduate courses from a public university located in Rio de Janeiro. The interviews were conducted between April and November 2021 and the corpus was analyzed by means of text analysis, with the aid of the IRAMUTEQ® software. Results: the similarity analysis of the thematic corpus gave rise to two figures, where the central words were “Politics” and “COREN”, respectively. The nurses' perceptions about politics and political participation encompass elements, actions and relationships linked to the characteristics inherent to the class and to the representative bodies. Final considerations: the Neoliberal model contributes to nurses distancing from political struggles in the work environment due to fear of losing their job, to overload and to fatigue. Consequently, claims are not prioritized.
