Abstract

In this paper, we reflect on the displacement of the protagonist Raimundo, from the novel A palavra que resta, by Stênio Gardel (2021). The discussion proposed here allows us to problematize the (de)construction of identities based on the transit of the protagonist of this novel, investigating in more detail the successive wanderings that make up his life trajectory, as there is a departure from the place of origin (backlands) to another space (metropolis) and, at some point, the protagonist returns. The choice was based on the perception that the narrative articulates the experience of displacement with the performance of gender roles as identity guides, a displacement that implies a change not only in the geography of transit, but also in the subjective landscape. In view of this, we propose to think of the body in transition as a body that presents dissident marks and discourses dissonant from those formulated about an ideal body, since the displaced bodies belong to narratives that have sometimes been left on the margins of literary criticism. In this sense, the strategy of the novel in question is to highlight dissident sexual experiences and desires in displacement, giving voice to marginalized subjectivities. The discussion is based on the propositions of Doreen Massey (2015), Louro (2020), Preciado (2017/2020), among others.
