In this article, we aim to analyze the variation of the Portuguese language, from a diachronic and comparative perspective, based on the definitions of some linguists and dictionaries, and point out some variational uses. The work is divided into three parts: the first is intended as a brief overview of the trajectory of linguistic thought, situating the linguistic aspect that interests us, in particular, as it has a close relationship with the topic in question: Sociolinguistics; the second turns to an analytical-historical approach to variation, highlighting the perspectives of each chosen author in relation to the theme; in the third, we have a treatment given to variation and some occurrences in the language, showing recent linguistic-variational behavior. For this study, we bring to light the conceptual records of Dubois et al (1973), Mattoso Câmara Jr. (1986), Orlandi (2012), Azeredo (2002; 2018) and others. In general, we found that researchers leave their records, their knowledge about the variation and could/can help us in research on the subject in question.
