Abstract

Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday (1925-2018) was an important linguist, whose ideas traveled the world, especially after the release of An Introduction To Functional Grammar, in 1985, in which the author presents the multifunctional conception of language. Given this assumption, we set up the following problem: how do Brazilian periodicals (1985-2004) present the ideas defended by M.A.K Halliday? From this, this study, based on the methods and interpretative proposals of Linguistic Historiography, seeks to analyze the reception of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Grammar (1985;1994) in the periodicals: Revista Ilha do Desterro and Revista Delta, responsible for the initial propagation of the ideas linguistics of the aforementioned theorist. This work is based on Swiggers (2012) regarding the categories of content and context as correlative dimensions in Linguistic Historiography research; in Altman (2003), on the mechanisms of production and reception of ideas that contribute to the formulation of linguistic knowledge; and in Murray (1994), on rhetoric of continuity and rhetoric of rupture. The analyzes show that Halliday's ideas were already circulating in the Brazilian scene, but the first mentions of Systemic-Functional Grammar (1985) are found in articles published in Revista Ilha do Desterro by Carmen Rosa Caldas-Couthard, Tim Jhons and Muriel Havel de Vasconcellos , in 1992.
