Abstract

This paper deliberates on metalanguage in the National High School Exam (ENEM), starting from its implementation in 1998 up to the 2024 edition. To this end, we will base ourselves on the theoretical assumptions of Bechara, Leite, Neves and Possenti. Methodologically, we organized the data from the PDF tests available on the ENEM website, from 1998 to 2024. The data revealed that metalanguage questions has decreased over the editions: from 1998 to 2008, the percentage of metalanguage questions in the language test in the Portuguese Language curricular component was 14.54%, in the editions from 2009 to 2024, this percentage is 9.45%. These results allow us to conclude that the exclusion of questions related to metalanguage should not be interpreted as a lack of interest in this subject, but as a necessary choice in order to create space for other skills to be tested in ENEM, so that the diversity of linguistic skills can be assessed.
