Definite article in noun phrases with toponym in the Peregrinação

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the linguistic behavior of definite article in noun phrases with toponym in Peregrinação, a work written in the third quarter of the 16th century by Fernão Mendes Pinto. The analysis was based on the Givónian typological-functional model and Labovian variationist sociolinguistics. Thirteen linguistic variables were tested, of which only nine were statistically relevant in the cases of variation, in the following descending order: versatility, SN structure, indicator of geographic entity, genitive structure, mention, syntactic function, quantifier, tradition and coordination. A comparison was also carried out with results relating to noun phrases with anthroponyms in the same work, in order to identify similarities and differences. César Nardelli Cambraia possui graduação em Letras (Português-Alemão) pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1992), mestrado em Estudos Lingüísticos pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1996), doutorado em Filologia e Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade de São Paulo (2000) e pós-doutorado em Lingüística Românica pela Universitat de Barcelona (2010). Atualmente é professor titular na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais e tem experiência na área de Lingüística, com ênfase em Lingüística Românica e Crítica Textual, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: estudo histórico e comparado de morfossintaxe de línguas românicas em uma perspectiva tipológico-funcional, lexicologia sócio-histórica e edição de textos românicos antigos.
