The Women Writers, Letter to Eduarda

Abstract

This work is a translation of the article "Las literatas, carta a Eduarda" published in 1866 in the Almanaque de Galicia para uso de la juventud elegante y de buen tono, in Spanish, by the writer Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885). Considered one of the founders of Galician literature, alongside Eduardo Pondal and Manuel Curros Enríquez, Rosalía de Castro wrote poems, novels, and articles for newspapers. In this text, now translated into Portuguese, we find, through the fictional strategy of epistolary writing, an important material regarding the lack of recognition of women in literature. With an ironic tone that allows us to grasp the author's indignant and forceful voice, we see the literary landscape of 19th-century Galicia; a space to which Rosalía addresses, in a kind of microcosm, to question a strongly patriarchal society that extends beyond the borders of her land
