The platformized public sphere: big techs, disinformation, and democratic erosion

This article examines the reconfiguration of the public sphere in the context of digital platformization, analyzing how the business model of big techs and algorithmic mediation intensify informational disorder and pose a threat to deliberative democracy. Based on the theoretical framework of Jürgen Habermas, the study adopts a qualitative approach of critical bibliographic review to investigate the transformation of the public space into an arena fragmented by disinformation and polarization. The analysis demonstrates that the engagement logic of platforms, driven by economic interests, corrodes the foundations of democratic debate by prioritizing viral content at the expense of informational accuracy and pluralism. It is concluded that the erosion of the public sphere represents a substantial hollowing out of the democratic regime, since disinformation, by distorting reality, paralyzes rational judgment, corrupts the public space and weakens the bond between citizenship and political decision-making.
