Abstract

Introduction: This paper aims to learn about the perception of usersin the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), to what regardsthe role of nutritionists in primary health care, identifying if theyacknowledge the importance of the nutritionist’s work for theirhealth, and verify their expectations in relation to it. Methods:Semi-structured individual interviews were applied to users ofPrimary Health Units, under follow up or otherwise with theunit nutritionist. The interviews were transcribed and submittedto a discursive textual analysis. Results: The nutritionist wascorrectly associated to food, feeding and nutrition, althoughthe boundaries of their function are subtle, suggesting a weakprofessional identity. The work developed has always beenpositively evaluated and recognized as important for the users’health. The expectations related to the practice point to the needof humanized and integral care, including more actions for thecollectivity – community and team work – in accordance withpresent health policies. Conclusions: To meet expectations andadvance in the professionalization process it is necessary to listenand fulfill the demands, as well as assess the education processand daily practice, taking into account the new paradigms ofprimary care and health promotion.

Nutricionista (CRN 9499), formada pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, com residência em Atenção Básica em Saúde Coletiva pela Escola de Saúde Pública/RS. Atualmente mestranda do programa de pós graduação em Epidemiologia da UFRGS na linha de pesquisa de Epidemiologia Nutricional.

Maurem Ramos, Nutricionista, professora do Departamento de Medicina Social da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Doutora em Ciências da Saúde pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil

Sou Graduada em Nutrição pela Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (1976), Mestre em Psicologia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (2000) e Doutora em Ciencias da Saúde pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2008). Sou professora do Departamento de Medicina Social da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Minha área de atuação é em Nutrição Social com regência em Educação Alimentar/nutricional, supervisora do internato de nutrição social .
