The adequate performance of School Food Councils can reduce irregularities in the use of public resources and improve the quality of school meals. This study sought to know the working resources and performance of school nutrition counselors based on the regulations of the National School Feeding Programme. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 425 counselors from 84 municipalities of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Pearson's chi-square test and a Poisson regression analysis, and the prevalence ratio was obtained. The results indicated the dysfunction of the studied School Food Councils, inadequate working resources for counselors, and a lack of knowledge of program regulations. The prevalence ratios suggest positive action on social control when the counselor is democratically elected and they have adequate resources and access to information regarding the program's regulations. The findings indicate the need to provide counselors with continuing education, improve their working resources, and favor their participative and democratic performance, providing effective social control of the program.
