Abstract

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a teacher in the province of Mendoza, C. N. Vergara (1859-1929) underwent a series of experiences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a Republic school—that is a school animated by ideals of political solidarity. In this paper I intend to bring his experience to bear on the concepts of republic, educational institution, politics, and solidarity, starting with some relevant educational incidents in the 21st century. I offer short biographies of children that evoke the life flowing in and out of educational institutions, including themes such as adults as overshadowing subjects in schools and the institutionalization of childhood. I then offer the Mercedes Normal School in Argentina as an example of an educational institution in which the presence of philosophy—a form of philosophy that does not remain within its walls but mobilizes, overflowing into the streets, stimulating the renewal of actors, actions and intentions-- fulfills the republican promise invoked by Vergara.

Mariana Alvarado (Mendoza, 1976) es doctora en Filosofía (FFyL-UNCuyo), profesora de grado universitario en Filosofía (FFyL-UNCuyo), especialista en Constructivismo y Educación (FLACSO), diplomada en Cultura y Comunicación (FCPyS-UNCuyo). Becaria Postdoctoral en CONICET. Investigadora del Centro de Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias de Filosofía en la Escuela y del Instituto de Filosofía Argentina y Americana (FFyL-UNCuyo). Ejerció la docencia como Profesora Adjunta en Epistemología en la carrera de Gestión y Administración Universitaria (FCSyP-UNCuyo). Participa en proyectos de investigación de la Secretaría de Ciencia, Técnica y Posgrado de la UNCuyo y de CONICET. Ha sido compiladora del libro Filosofía y Educación en Nuestra América (2011) y de Experiencia y pensamiento (2006). Ha participado en los volúmenes I y II de la colección Diversidad e Integración en Nuestra América (2010 y 2011). Es autora de capítulos de libros y artículos publicados en revistas de circulación internacional. Sus intereses se instalan en el campo de la Historia de las Ideas y del Pensamiento Latinoamericano así como en la producción de materiales didácticos que lo vinculen con el sistema educativo.
