Abstract

In This article proposes a reading of the short story “Adão e Eva”, by Machado de Assis, starting from the biblical story of the ritual of the origin and creation of things and of man as a participant in the world, since the pertinent dialogue and productive with the art of Luiz Paulo Baravelli. Therefore, in the interaction between literature and art there is a semiotic symbiosis, as the different languages build a new and transformative universe that reinterprets the artistic discourse, given that it marks a path of re-reading the tale of Machado's literary tradition in tune with the paintings reproduced in art for young people, by Baravelli. This still implies a modern look at tradition with a renewing function in communicating with today's social changes, and, in this attempt, it is investigated through the anthropological theory of rites of passage described by Arnold Van Gennep (2011), the intertextual path with the biblical text and intersemiotic path with the paintings, analyzing, above all, the planes of content and expression. Among the authors behind this research, Antonio Candido (1977), Roberto Schwarz (2000), Clauss Cluver (1997), and others stand out.
