O auto (jeux: denominação genérica das primeiras peças quesurgem a partir do século XII em França) tornou-se uma das modalidadesdramáticas das mais utilitárias no teatro religioso medieval,tendo espaço privilegiado nas moralidades (também conhecidas comoauto alegóricos). A partir do final da Guerra dos Cem anos, osjeux diversificam-se e multiplicam-se.Dessa forma, muito cedo os autos alegóricos, sacramentais eas peças de lendas ganharam a praça do mercado. Por conta da ascensãoda população urbana europeia e da quebra do monopólio clericaldas celebrações religiosas, esses autos alegóricos, de moralidadese de milagres dividem espaço com os grêmios e corporações quefinanciam os espetáculos. Os acessórios e figurinos cênicos passamagora às mãos da burguesia e dos artesãos.
