SOBRE O LATIM E OUTROS LATINS: ALGUMAS REFLEXÕES SOCIOLINGÜÍSTICAS

Não é fato recente o reconhecimento da relação entre língua e sociedadepor parte de estudiosos tanto da lingüística quanto da sociologia.No final do século XIX, os dialetólogos começaram a registrar as falaspopulares através de inquéritos, fazendo observações, sobretudo de aspectosregionalistas e, em menor escala, de variações sociais e individuais(Ilari, 1992: 25-32). Contudo, pesquisas de maior interesse e contribuiçãodesenvolveram-se a partir de 1950 e 1960, nos Estados Unidos, como destaque de William Labov, que, utilizando um método sofisticado deentrevista, associou variações fonológicas a dados extralingüísticos dosfalantes, como nível de escolaridade, profissão, renda e status social.(Labov, 1976: 45-126)
