Carlos Reis nasceu em Angra do Heroísmo. É professor catedrático da Faculdade de Letras de Coimbra, onde tem lecionado Literatura Portuguesa, Teoria da Literatura, Estudos Queirosianos e Estudos Narrativos. Desde 2012 é coordenador do Centro de Literatura Portuguesa (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), onde dirige o projeto “Figuras da Ficção”.
Lecionou em diversas universidades estrangeiras: na Universidade de Salamanca, na Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison, na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, na Universidade de Massachusetts-Dartmouth, na Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul e na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.
Dirige a edição crítica das obras de Eça de Queirós e a História Crítica da Literatura Portuguesa. É diretor da revista Queirosiana (Fundação Eça de Queirós). Publicou mais de uma dezena de livros, em Portugal e no estrangeiro (Espanha, Alemanha, França e Brasil).
Foi diretor da Biblioteca Nacional, Reitor da Universidade Aberta, presidente da Associação Internacional de Lusitanistas e da European Association of Distance Teaching Universities.
