Horror e imaginação romântica: como Aluísio Azevedo se apropria de “A morte amorosa” de Théophile Gautier em A mortalha de Alzira

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar como Aluísio Azevedo se apropria do conto “A morte amorosa”, de Théophile Gautier, para escrever A mortalha de Alzira. A publicação do romance de Aluísio Azevedo levanta uma série de questões acerca do debate entre o Realismo e o Naturalismo na literatura brasileira e indica como a chamada imaginação romântica, que agrega o horror e o fantástico, é posta em segundo plano na segunda metade do século XIX. A adaptação empreendida por Aluísio Azevedo revela as tensões entre modelos literários distintos que buscavam espaço no campo literário e expressa o contraste entre o gosto popular e os processos de canonização da literatura brasileira.
