The freedom to teach, learn and research is the basis of democratic societies because it constitutes a fundamental right to benefit the dignity of the human person and society. Along with this principle, the article argues that in the educational field specifically, the relationship between freedom to teach, learn and research and human and social rights is at the center of attacks launched by the neoliberal offensive and its agents, including the Escola Sem Partido, and its project to create a new pedagogy of social control. Under the lens of critical analysis of dialectical reflection, the article discusses the ambiguities of the word freedom and, supported by bibliographic and documentary sources, examines which movements attacking teachers, such as ESP, impose restrictions on the freedom to teach against which teachers are contrasted with the creative political metaphor of the “gag”.
