This paper investigates the theoretical divergences regarding the limits of legitimate resistance, drawing from the distinctions between the liberal and left perspectives as outlined by Brown and Halley in their critique of legal mobilization. By examining the Brazilian case, the June 2013 protests serves as an illustrative example to understand how the liberal view on the limits of resistance is realized in the interpretive frameworks advanced by state repression. Finally, the text points out that the controversies surrounding the legitimacy of certain social mobilizations reflect a deeper divide concerning the different meanings of democracy.
