Sexual orientation and depressive symptoms: mediating role of self-esteem and life satisfaction

Abstract

Objective: to verify whether self-esteem and satisfaction with life exert mediating effects on the relationship between minority sexual orientations and depressive symptoms in a sample of graduate students. Method: analytical, cross-sectional study conducted with 321 Brazilian graduate students between March/April 2021. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 was used to assess depressive symptoms, was used too, Rosemberg´s Self-Esteem Scale and the Life Satisfaction Scale. Simple mediation analyzes were conducted using the PROCESS macro. Results: graduate students with minority sexual orientations had more severe depressive symptoms and lower indicators of self-esteem and life satisfaction than their heterosexual peers. Self-esteem and satisfaction with life partially mediated the relationship between sexual orientation and severity of depressive symptoms in a proportion of, respectively, 48.26% and 37.54%. Conclusion: self-esteem and life satisfaction were important mediators of the relationship between minority sexual orientations and depressive symptoms among graduate students.

Graduação em Enfermagem pela Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste (2006); especialista em Saúde e Segurança do Trabalhador (2009) e especialista em Pedagogia Hospitalar pela Universidade Gama Filho - RJ (2010). Mestrado em Psicologia pela Universidade Federal de Rondônia. Doutorado em andamento em Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso. Tem experiência na área de enfermagem hospitalar, com ênfase enfermagem médico-cirúrgica. Como pesquisador tem interesse em estudos sobre saúde mental, estresse laboral, saúde do trabalhador e qualidade de vida.

Samira Reschetti Marcon, Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso

Possui graduação em Enfermagem e Obstetrícia pela Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso-UFMT (1995), especialização em Saúde Pública pela UFMT(2001), mestrado em Saúde e Ambiente pela UFMT (2003) e Doutorado em Ciências pela Universidade Federal de São Paulo-UNIFESP (2010). Atualmente é professora Associada da Faculdade de Enfermagem (FAEN) da UFMT e líder do Núcleo de Estudos em Saúde Mental (NESM) vinculado ao Programa de Pós-graduação da FAEN/ UFMT. Tem experiência na área de Enfermagem, com ênfase em Saúde Mental, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Saúde mental e atenção psicossocial e comportamento suicida.

Hugo Gedeon Barros dos Santos, Hospital Universitário Júlio Müller

Possui graduação em Enfermagem pela Faculdade de Quatro Marcos-FQM (2011). Pós-graduado em Saúde do Adulto e do Idoso com Ênfase em Atenção Cardiovascular na modalidade de Residência Multiprofissional - Hospital Universitário Júlio Müller (HUJM) da Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso-UFMT. Especialista em Saúde Mental pela Universidade Católica Dom Bosco - UCDB. Mestrado e Doutorado em Enfermagem pela Faculdade de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso-UFMT desenvolvendo suas atividades na linha de pesquisa em saúde mental junto ao Núcleo de Estudos em Saúde Mental (NESM). Atualmente integra a equipe do Centro de Simulação em Saúde do HUJM.
