ABSTRACT
This study aims at characterizing nurses participating in Telehealth RJ, a continuing distance education program. The research is quantitative, longitudinal, and descriptive. Data were collected from 2009 to 2010 through the Rio de Janeiro Telehealth database, where the profiles of about 120 subjects were analyzed. Nurses under 40 years of age and residing in urban areas prevailed. 85% (eighty-five percent) claimed to have finished a specialization course. A part-time contract emerged as the commonest labor link among those nurses. However, the nurses in that condition were the ones who showed the highest dissatisfaction level. Books came out as the most common learning tool identified. 50% (fifty percent) of subjects reported daily internet research for professional training. Distance education is a viable way to maintain educational programs. However, it is essential to identify the target audience to ensure success of activities.
