Nutrition and knowledge: a study of podcasts on nutrition in Brazil

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics, quality, and thematic profiles of nutrition podcasts available on audio platforms in Brazil, assessing their potential as tools for scientific dissemination. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study incorporating qualitative and quantitative methods was conducted to analyze nutrition podcasts on the Spotify® platform. Data collection occurred between February and December 2022. Categorization and quality assessment criteria were adapted from previously described instruments in the literature, evaluating aspects such as authorship, editing, accessibility, references, and social media presence, with scores ranging from 0 to 10 points. Additionally, a lexical analysis of the podcast titles was performed using IRAMUTEQ software to generate a word cloud and conduct a similarity analysis. Results: A total of 457 nutrition-related podcasts were eligible for the study, of which 228 (49.5%) scored ≥7 points, indicating adequate quality. The most frequently discussed topics were “clinical nutrition,” “food and nutrition education,” and “foods.” Only 15.8% cited scientific references, and 82.5% exhibited irregular publication frequencies. Conclusion: Despite their potential as educational tools, most nutrition podcasts demonstrate limited quality, reinforcing the need for standardized evaluation criteria and incentives for evidence-based production.
