Food supply dynamics from the perspective of Farmers Markets: aspects of the consumer food environment

Introduction: Farmers markets are a segment of food supply dynamics and play a significant role as part of the consumer food environment. Objective: To present the dynamics of food supply at farmers markets in the municipalities of Mariana and Ouro Preto - MG, as well as the sociodemographic characteristics of vendors and attendees. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in farmers markets in the municipalities of Mariana and Ouro Preto - MG, with primary data. Seven farmers markets were evaluated in relation to the supply profile, profile of vendors and attendees. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to assess the normality of the data and a descriptive analysis was performed using the mean, prevalence percentage and confidence interval (95% CI). Results: There was a predominance of conventional markets; organic foods were sold alongside a greater supply of fruits and vegetables relative to ultra-processed foods; most vendors produced the food they sold; and attendees reported shopping at the farmers markets weekly and had been attending the market for more than 6 months. Conclusions: Farmers markets provide healthy food to the population, thereby fulfilling an important role in food supply and contributing to spaces capable of promoting Food and Nutrition Security through sustainable and healthy food environments.
