Abstract

Control of diabetes mellitus and the prevention of complicationsinvolve knowledge and implementation of self-care tasks for thepatient. This study aimed to verify adherence to treatment andknowledge about type 2 diabetes, and to identify associationsbetween this s variables and other demographic and clinicalsocial nature. It is cross-sectional study with 35 patients goersnutrition clinic of a hospital. For the collection of informationwere used data from medical records and interviews with thehelp of questionnaires. Statistical analyzes were performedusing SPSS 17.0 s program. There was high overweight index,knowledge parcial about the disease and differences between themeans of adherence to various types of care activities. Factorssuch as age and gender showed influence self-care behavior.The predominant characteristics mind found in the groupanalyzed are described in the literature as factors associated withdifficulties in developing appropriate actions care and more proneto complications. The awareness of the importance of followinga balanced diet and the practice of other self-care activities inDM can act as a tool in preventing the onset of complications andpromoting quality of life.
