TRANSFORMAÇÕES DA CARTOGRAFIA NO CONTEXTO DA GEOGRAFIA

Abstract

Representations of space and time bring the possibility of understanding patterns that help us relate causalities, measure shapes, distributions, and changes, and even identify trends. In the 21st century, we find ourselves immersed in an immense volume of information, most of which is spatial in nature. In this context of Big Data, an important and emerging branch of Geography has taken shape and grown stronger: the Geoinformational Approach. Many fields of knowledge turn to this universe of representation and analysis, aiming to contribute services to society. It is essential to pay attention to cartographic concepts to enable appropriate analyses within this vast and increasingly accessible volume of geospatial data. New sensors, data with additional dimensions such as altitude and time, new tools, and their integration also demand new forms of access and quality control regarding the data acquired and the information produced. The use of Infographics, StoryMaps, Geoportals, and Virtual Globes can greatly contribute to facilitating access to and understanding of this enormous volume of data. Participatory and Collaborative Cartographies contribute to map production, even by non-specialists. These are challenges for various professionals, including Geography teachers.
