Da Antiguidade aos tempos modernos a experiência editorialtem mostrado que o texto real e final passou por tantos idílios que seteve de constituir uma disciplina cientifica. Esta disciplina que sechama hoje crítica textual, e também ecdótica, embora muitos autoresnem sempre aceitem os termos como sinônimos, atribuindo-lhesatividades diferentes que não cabe aqui enfrentar. Assim, compete àcrítica textual a reconstituição de um original perdido, ou de um textoconsiderado fidedigno, com base na tradição manuscrita e impressãodireta ou indireta da obra, conforme as demandas de uma metodologiacientifica.
