This article presents research results on the formation of readers and the taste for literature among adolescents and young people, students enrolled in the final years of basic education. The aim of the investigation was to highlight, through the voices of the readers, that there is an intense circulation of books among them and that there is a fervent reading community, indicating that young people do read literature. The theoretical framework used in the discussions and analysis of the results comes from studies and readings of other research, especially Ceccantini (2000) and Souza (2019), and the theorists Abreu (2006), Candido (1995), and Bourdieu (1983). As results, based on the field research conducted through a questionnaire, we perceive that there is significant literary reading happening among young people, that there is regularity in literary reading among adolescents, and that they have specific criteria when choosing their readings, encompassing both intra-literary and extra-literary factors. Finally, we also found that the absence of readings of award-winning works occurs due to a lack of knowledge and gaps in the teaching work that does not present such works to their students, as with good mediation, these books could be read and well received by their readers.
