The theme of refuge can be considered divisive, as it deals with complex issues that, for many, are inappropriate for children and young adults. However, the refugee situation can be presented to these readers in a sensitive way, which not only provokes reflection, but also, and most importantly, develops empathy and solidarity towards refugees. From this perspective, we propose the analysis of the book Kalil: the refugee boy, to demonstrate that the literature for children and young adults constitutes an important tool for the process of welcoming and inserting refugee children in the school environment while promoting interculturality.
