This qualitative-descriptive study aimed to investigate the conceptions attributed by patients with leprosy related to health care and psychosocial developments, according to gender. Eight patients with leprosy in multidisciplinary care at the Rehabilitation Division of Institute Lauro de Souza Lima, Bauru-SP, with visible physical disabilities and up to five years of diagnosis participated. Data collection was carried out from an interview script with open questions, audio recorded and transcribed in full for content analysis. The results were organized into thematic categories: (1) Perception of signs and search for health services; (2) Notion of healthy body and self-care exercise; (3) Conception of femininity and/or masculinity and (4) Perceived changes after leprosy diagnosis. It is concluded that gender patterns influence conceptions and health care by leprosy patients and this should be considered in the prevention and care of this population.
