MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

The journal follows the publication standards and style of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th ed., 2020), with specific adaptations as indicated on this page.

Manuscripts must be prepared in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins (top, bottom, left, and right), in Times New Roman, 12-point font. All pages must be numbered (upper right corner), and the text must be justified.

At the time of submission, authors must upload three files:

1) Manuscript text

The manuscript file must be named “texto_para_avaliação”, be in Microsoft Word format, and must not exceed 4 MB.

The manuscript must be organized in the following order:

– Titles

The manuscript must include a title in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The Portuguese title must not exceed 15 words. Titles must be centered, with each major word capitalized. Do not use bold formatting. Manuscripts classified as experience reports must include the words “experience report” in the title.

– Abstract in Portuguese, English (Abstract), and Spanish (Resumen)

Abstracts in Portuguese, English (Abstract), and Spanish (Resumen) must be single-spaced, justified, in 12-point font, and must not contain citations or abbreviations. The Portuguese abstract must contain between 150 and 200 words. The English and Spanish versions must be of equivalent length.

The expected content varies according to the type of manuscript, as described in sections 2.9 and 3.3 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed., 2020):

  • Research report: brief description of the research problem; objective; study design; relevant characteristics of participants or data sources; data collection and analysis procedures; results; conclusions or final considerations, including implications or applications.
  • Theoretical study: objective; central conceptual problem or question; theoretical principles or assumptions; main line of argument; contribution to the field.
  • Literature review: objective; scope of the literature reviewed (sources and number of studies); time frame covered; main conclusions and contribution to the field.
  • Experience report: objective; context; summary of actions carried out; results or lessons learned; implications for practice or the field.
  • Book review: identification of the work reviewed; purpose of the review; critical perspective; central argument; contribution to Psychology.
  • Interview and translation: presentation of the interviewee or translated text; relevance to the field; main contributions.

In all cases, abstracts must be self-contained and intelligible independently of the full text. Each required element should be addressed in at least one explicit sentence. Avoid vague statements such as “results are discussed” or “implications are presented.”

– Keywords: Following each abstract, provide three to five keywords in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The descriptors must be equivalent across languages. Keywords must be written in lowercase and separated by commas. Preference should be given to terms from controlled vocabularies, such as the BVS-Psi terminology database (www.bvs-psi.org.br). Avoid overly generic terms (e.g., “psychology”, “research”) that hinder indexing and retrieval. The terms Palavras-chave, Keywords, and Palabras clave must appear in italics.

– Text Structure

The manuscript must present a clearly identifiable structure, organized through a system of headings and subheadings that reflect its internal organization. As the introduction is identifiable by its position, the heading “Introduction” should not be included.

The overall structure must comply with the standards of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th ed., 2020).

– Footnotes. Footnotes should be avoided whenever possible. When necessary, they must be indicated in the text using Arabic numerals and presented as endnotes.

– Figures and Tables. Tables must be formatted in 12-point font with double spacing. The intended placement of figures and tables must be indicated in the text, and they must be presented after the References section, one per page. The terms Figure and Table must always be capitalized in the text and accompanied by their respective numbers. APA 7th edition guidelines use only the terms Tables and Figures, not Charts or Graphs.

If the manuscript includes photographs of identifiable individuals, signed consent authorizing the use of their image must be submitted. Additionally, an authorization letter from the photographer or copyright holder must be provided, stating that they hold the rights to the images and grant permission for reproduction by Estudos e Pesquisas em Psicologia. Authors are fully responsible for any issues related to image copyright. The journal does not assume responsibility for any costs associated with image rights.

– Citations. Citations must follow APA 7th edition standards. Authors’ names must be followed by the year of publication at the first citation within each paragraph. Direct quotations must be enclosed in quotation marks and include the page number. Quotations with 40 or more words must be presented as block quotations (new paragraph, 1.25 cm left indent, 12-point font). Do not use bold or italics for emphasis; use underlining where necessary.

The manuscript must contain no more than three self-citations, considering all authors. In cases where self-citation may compromise blind peer review, the author’s name must be replaced with “AUTHOR” and the year (e.g., AUTHOR, 2020). In the reference list, such entries must appear at the beginning (not in alphabetical order) as:
Author, year – reference to be included after peer review. Omitted information must be provided in the Title Page.

– Reference Lists. Research reports, theoretical studies, book reviews, experience reports, translations, and interviews may include up to 30 references. Literature reviews may include up to 40 references. References must be double-spaced, with a 1.25 cm hanging indent, and without extra spacing between entries. They must be listed in alphabetical order by authors’ surnames, which must not be replaced by dashes. References must follow APA 7th edition standards. For journal articles with a DOI, only the full DOI link should be provided (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1109/5.771073). For sources without a DOI (e.g., dissertations, theses), include the URL when available. All links must be active and accessible. References to works under review are not permitted; only works accepted for publication (in press) may be cited. The use of URL shorteners should be avoided.

– Anonymization: Authors must remove from the manuscript any information that could identify authorship, institutional affiliation, or research location. Identifying information must also be removed from the Word file properties.

2) Title Page

  • Authors must download the Title Page template available at this link and submit it as a Supplementary File.
  • The file must be named “folha_de_rosto”, be in Microsoft Word format, and must not exceed 4 MB.

The Title Page must include:

  • The section to which the manuscript is submitted: Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Clio-Psyché (History of Psychology), or, where applicable, a Dossier;
  • The type of manuscript: research report, theoretical study, literature review, book review, experience report, translation, or interview;

  • A statement specifying each author’s contribution, using the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy);
  • A statement on the use of artificial intelligence in the research.

The Title Page must be signed by all authors in the designated field of the template.

3) Submission Checklist

The lead author must download the Submission Checklist available at this link, sign it, scan it, and upload it as a Supplementary File. The checklist must be in PDF format, the file must be named “checklist”, and it must not exceed 4 MB.

SUBMISSION IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH

Manuscripts may be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. If authors choose to publish in English or Spanish, the manuscript must be submitted in Portuguese at the time of online submission, except in cases where all authors are native speakers of English or Spanish. After the review process, if the manuscript is accepted, authors must confirm the language of publication and will be responsible for the costs of translation into English or Spanish. Translation must be carried out exclusively by translators recommended by Estudos e Pesquisas em Psicologia. If the manuscript is originally written in English or Spanish by native speakers, it must still be reviewed by one of the translators indicated by the journal. Under no circumstances will translations or revisions performed by other translators be accepted.

Authors are encouraged to seek funding from their institutions or research agencies to cover translation costs, as the journal does not provide financial support for this purpose.

PRESENTATION OF FIGURES OR TABLES

Tables must be formatted in 12-point font with double spacing. The intended placement of Figures and Tables must be indicated in the text, and they must be presented at the end of the manuscript, one per page. All figures and tables must follow the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th ed., 2020).

Figures must be submitted in JPEG format (200–400 dpi).

Tables, including titles and notes, must be created using the Word table tool (not pasted as images), in black and white, and inserted one per page after the References section. Tables must not exceed 17.5 cm in width and 23.7 cm in height. The total number of figures and tables must not exceed five.

PRESENTATION OF CITATIONS, REFERENCES, AND NOTES

Citations and references must follow APA 7th edition guidelines.

Footnotes should be avoided. When strictly necessary, they must be presented as endnotes, in accordance with APA standards.

MANUSCRIPT REVIEW PROCEDURES

  • Editors will assess the manuscript, including checks for plagiarism, duplicate submission, prior publication, and potential research misconduct;
  • The manuscript will be submitted to double-blind peer review in accordance with the journal’s editorial criteria;
  • Final acceptance of the manuscript is the responsibility of the Editorial Board.

Review reports will be sent to the authors. If revisions are requested and the authors choose to revise the manuscript, the revised version must be accompanied by a response letter to the editor detailing the reviewers’ comments, how each comment was addressed, and justifications for any suggestions not implemented. All changes in the revised manuscript must be indicated in blue font. The use of the Word “Comments” tool is not permitted.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to make minor editorial adjustments to accepted manuscripts in order to ensure compliance with the journal’s standards, provided that such changes do not alter the content. The Board also reserves the right to decide on exceptional cases to maintain the journal’s quality and regularity.
