The objective is to investigate whether public spaces in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are suitable for the model of full accessibility and universal design. Methodologically, we performed an integrative review to answer the question: what are the necessary elements for the configuration of universal design in public and private spaces, aiming at full accessibility? The literature search uses Capes Periódicos, with the keywords universal design and environment, resulting in 16 selected studies. The analysis and synthesis of the data uses a descriptive and qualitative design. The result points to the following universal design elements: equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, error tolerance, low physical effort, size and space for approach and use. Subsequently, we performed a participant observation in two public spaces in Passo Fundo, aiming to apply the universal design assumptions and verify whether they meet the essential elements to be accessible spaces. The result is the absence of universal design's elements in the environments. Also, we pointed possible improvements in spaces to ensure the universal design and democratization of equitable use.Downloads
