Abstract

The article is a discussion about Brazilian popular music of Amazonian expression, based on the concept proposed by Professor Paulo Nunes in the context of Brazilian literature of Amazonian expression. The aim is to understand why the music produced in the North is commonly referred to as regional Amazonian music, since it is Brazilian popular music, with urbanity, which does not only express regionalism, but also has a firm identity, produces its own essence and is part of the so-called MPB. The method adopted was bibliographical research. It highlights the role of the dominant elites (from the 19th century to the first four decades of the 20th century), who imposed a Eurocentric musical culture, denying the cultural manifestations of native peoples, blacks and the poor, because it was a product linked to the working class. Popular music produced in the Amazon is still treated by the “Brazilian musical canon” - monopolized by the states of the South-Southeast axis - as exotic, picturesque and primitive. Every time we accept this concept, we are reproducing a reductive, inferior label, feeding historical vices that separate Amazonian musical production from national production.
