TRENDS IN SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION ABOUT THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS IN BRAZIL

Abstract

The article presents a review of the literature on the choice of school principals in Brazil. The object of analysis is 1,238 scientific productions on “School Election” and “School Management”, cataloged in five relevant repositories for the area of education. The objective was to identify main trends in scientific production regarding the choice of school principals. Of 1,238 productions, 108 of them dealt with the choice of school principal in public Basic Education institutions and, based on their content, it was possible to perceive seven categories, they are: 1) those that deal with the relationship between the process of choosing school principals and democratization of school management, 2) those that deal with recruitment strategies for the position of school director, 3) those that deal with tensions between school autonomy and government management, 4) those that deal with the choice of school directors as a democratic practice in opposition to managerialism, 5) those that deal with the legality of the processes for choosing school directors, 6) those that deal with distortions and manipulations in the processes of choosing school directors, and 7) those that deal with other diverse topics. It was concluded that the majority of the scientific production analyzed (71%) deals with the relationship between democratic management and the process of choosing school directors, as well as strategies for filling the position of school director, which constitutes a strong trend in the debate About the subject.

Marcelo Ramos dos Santos, Secretaria Municipal de Educação de Duque de Caxias (SME), Brazil

Master in Education Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). He is currently a professor of Geography at the Municipal Education Secretariat of Duque de Caxias (RJ). He is a member of the Research Group on Work, Politics and Society (GTPS / UFRRJ) and the National Research and Post-Graduation in Education Association (ANPEd).

José dos Santos Souza, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), Brazil

Doctor in Sociology from the Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (IFCH/UNICAMP), with a Post-Doctorate from the Faculdade de Educação of UNICAMP. He is currently Associate Professor IV of Political Economy of Education and Educational Policy at the Departamento de Educação e Sociedade at the Instituto Multidisciplinar of the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), where he works as a professor at the Graduate Program in Education, Contemporary Contexts and Popular Demands (PPGEduc/UFRRJ) and degree courses. He is Leader of the Research Group on Work, Politics and Society (GTPS/UFRRJ); he is editor of the Revista Trabalho, Política e Sociedade; He is member of the Universitas-BR Network, the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies in Education (ANPEd), the National Association for Education Policy and Administration (ANPAE) and the Brazilian Association for Labor Studies (ABET).
