O presente ensaio tem como principal objetivo a análise das contribuições críticas e teóricas dos Estudos Culturais acerca da compreensão da surdez enquanto diferença, rompendo com a ideia de deficiência que orientava as leituras da surdez e do sujeito surdo. A presente análise parte da constatação de que a compreensão da comunidade surda enquanto um grupo minoritário que instaura um elemento de distinção na cultura hegemônica, resultando na construção de uma nova forma de representação do Outro sob o prisma da diferença é resultado da apropriação de conceitos como identidade, diferença e cultura a partir de uma perspectiva política. Para a obtenção deste objetivo, busca-se construir uma revisão bibliográfica que se estrutura em três eixos de análise: o primeiro focado na investigação das questões que orientaram a formação da disciplina Estudos Culturais; o segundo tem como objetivo discutir o conceito de diferença à luz das contribuições de teóricos pós-estruturalistas e dos Estudos Culturais e, por fim, o terceiro eixo examina o uso do conceito de diferença enquanto ferramenta crítica e teórica para o tratamento da surdez e do sujeito surdo.
