Buscaremos analisar neste artigo a relação entre as legislações educacionais e as condições objetivas de trabalho dos professores. Sob o aporte teórico de E. P. Thompson, tomaremos como base para a análise as reformas educacionais da década de 1990, as políticas que têm como marco o Ideb (Índice de Desenvolvimento da Educação Básica), o Compromisso Todos Pela Educação e o que chamamos de “Compromisso Fluminense” com as novas políticas educativas e suas interferências no trabalho docente. Nosso objetivo aqui foi lançar um olhar sobre as condições às quais os professores da Rede Estadual de Ensino do Rio de Janeiro estão submetidos, analisando a relação entre as políticas educacionais vivenciadas por eles e a dinâmica de seus processos de trabalho.
