A CATEGORIA GRAU NA SALA DE AULA: DO LIVRO DIDÁTICO À ABORDAGEM FUNCIONALISTA / THE CATEGORY OF DEGREE IN THE CLASSROOM: FROM THE TEXTBOOK TO THE FUNCTIONAL APPROACH

In this paper, we focus on the approach of the category of degree in elementary school. We aim to discuss the approach taken by Portuguese language textbooks (LDPs) and present a proposal for teaching the category of degree in elementary school classes on a functional approach. Our theoretical support is the North American Functional Linguistics (GIVÓN, 1995; FURTADO DA CUNHA, 2008; MARTELOTTA, 2011) and its correlation with the official guidelines for teaching Portuguese language (LP) in Brazil, according to Oliveira and Cezario (2007), and Bispo, Cordeiro and Lucena (2022). It is a descriptive, explanatory and interpretative study. The analysis of the LDPs shows that the study of degree is directly related to the inflection/variation of some grammatical classes, especially nouns and adjectives, and takes place through isolated words and sentences or in texts used as pretext for the study of the category. Our didactic proposal allows the teacher to teach about degree, considering how it functions in authentic texts and related to the students’ reality. This procedure allows a more meaningful learning, among other things, by taking as reference the mobilization of linguistic resources for the construction of meaning and the achievement of communicative goals. Therefore, it is based on the close relationship between form and function, as assumed by the theoretical perspective that supports it.
