Abstract

This article results from research that explored storytelling within the theatrical context, focusing on presentations for hospitalized children with cancer. The investigation was conducted during the course "Encenação IV" within the Theater program at UFSM (Federal University of Santa Maria) in Rio Grande do Sul. The objective of the theatrical presentation was to establish a genuine connection with the children, recognizing their capacity to make decisions and interact with the world around them. Through storytelling, we aimed to alleviate their fears and insecurities, using theater as a tool for the emotional well-being of children facing challenging situations. We demonstrated how the combination of theater and storytelling can be a valuable and inspiring intervention. This study underscores the vital importance of theater as an effective tool for improving the emotional and psychological well-being of children confronting complex health challenges. Furthermore, it serves as an inspirational reminder of how creativity and artistic expression can illuminate the path for these children, offering them not only a respite from illness-related concerns but also the ability to reconnect with their imagination and inner strength. This research paves the way for future initiatives aiming to incorporate theatrical and narrative elements even more deeply and effectively in the treatment and support of children facing adverse medical circumstances.
