ABSTRACT
This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate knowledge among members of the Fire Brigade of the biosafety recommendations received during their basic rescue training. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire from January to February 2011. Of a total of 409 respondents, 72.8% declared having received biosafety information. The correct moments for hand hygiene were identified by 90.4% of respondents, while only 14.1% correctly identified the activity and the indication of 70% alcohol. The use of disposable gloves during procedures was indicated by 95.7%. The 70% correct answer rate was found among firefighters who reported having received training on the subject. The content conveyed in training was effective in securing the correct answer rate. However, it is suggested permanent educational programs be introduced for these personnel.
