Significados atribuídos ao câncer por um grupo de mulheres [Meanings attributed to cancer by a group of women]

RESUMO: O estudo teve como objetivo analisar os significados atribuídos ao câncer por mulheres acompanhadas no Centro de Oncologia Dr. Muccini em Petrolina – PE, Brasil. Pesquisa qualitativa, do tipo descritiva. A coleta de dados ocorreu no mês de agosto de 2011, a partir da entrevista semiestruturada, realizada com 10 mulheres. O tratamento dos dados se deu por meio da análise de conteúdo de Bardin, chegando-se às categorias: mudanças na imagem corporal; a fé como conforto espiritual; medo do desconhecido. Percebeu-se com este trabalho, que cada pessoa reage de forma diferente perante seus reveses. Acredita-se que o escutar e o olhar atentamente tornam-se um instrumento importante para que o enfermeiro compreenda os doentes com câncer, em sua singularidade.
ABSTRACT: This qualitative, descriptive study aimed to examine meanings attributed to cancer by women attending the Dr. Muccini Oncology Center, in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. Data were collected in August 2011 from semi-structured interviews of 10 women. Data analysis based on Bardin content analysis revealed the categories: changes in body image; faith as spiritual comfort; and fear of the unknown. Through this study it was perceived that each person reacts differently to their setbacks. It is believed that attentive listening and looking become important tools for nurses to understand patients with cancer in their uniqueness.
RESUMEN: El objetivo del estudio fue analizar los significados atribuidos al cáncer por mujeres atendidas en el Centro de Oncología Dr. Muccini - Petrolina – PE, Brasil. Investigación cualitativa y descriptiva. La recolección de datos ocurrió en agosto de 2011, a partir de entrevistas semiestructuradas llevadas a cabo con 10 mujeres. Los datos fueron tratados a través del análisis de contenido de Bardin, llegándose a las categorías: cambios en la imagen corporal, la fe como conforto espiritual; miedo del desconocido. Se consideró en este trabajo, que cada persona reacciona de manera diferente con respecto a sus fracasos. Se cree que escuchar y mirar atentamente se convierten en una herramienta importante para el enfermero a comprender los pacientes con cáncer, en su singularidad.
