RESUMO: Objetivou-se analisar o gerenciamento dos resíduos sólidos produzidos em unidades básicas de saúde da família, desde a geração até a disponibilização para coleta externa. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório-descritivo, de abordagem qualitativa, realizado entre agosto de 2011 e janeiro de 2012, no município de Campina Grande-PB. Os dados foram coletados mediante entrevista semiestruturada feita com 55 profissionais pertencentes a 36 equipes de saúde da família, e analisados segundo o referencial da análise de conteúdo temático proposto por Bardin. Os resultados apontaram que a maioria das unidades não dispõe de local adequado para armazenamento temporário dos resíduos, havendo ausência de divulgação de normas e legislações específicas sobre os mesmos. Evidencia-se a necessidade de um plano de gerenciamento dos resíduos capaz de ser ajustado à realidade dos serviços de saúde observando as normas sanitárias e ambientais.
ABSTRACT: This study examined solid waste management at family primary health care centers, from generation to disposition for external collection. This qualitative exploratory, descriptive study was conducted from August 2011 to January 2012 in Campina Grande, Paraíba. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews of 55 professionals from 36 family health teams, and analyzed within the framework of Bardin thematic content analysis. The results showed that most facilities have no suitable space for temporary waste storage, and no specific standards and laws have been published on waste. This evidences the need for a waste management plan that can be adjusted to health service realities in compliance with health and environmental standards.
RESUMEN: Se objetivó analizar el gerenciamiento de los residuos sólidos producidos en unidades básicas de salud de la familia, desde la generación hasta la disponibilización para la coleta externa. Se trata de un estudio exploratorio/descriptivo, de abordaje cualitativo, realizado entre agosto de 2011 y enero de 2012, en el municipio de Campina Grande-PB-Brasil. Los datos fueron colectados mediante entrevista semiestructurada hecha con 55 profesionales pertenecientes a 36 equipos de salud de la familia, y analizados según el referencial del análisis de contenido temático propuesto por Bardin. Los resultados apuntaron que la mayoría de las unidades no disponen de local adecuado para almacenamiento temporário de los residuos. Habiendo falta de divulgación de normas y legislaciones específicas sobre ellos. Es evidente la necesidad de un plan de administración de los residuos capaz de ser ajustado a la realidad de los servicios de salud observando las normas sanitarias ambientales.
