Experiences of trans people in hospital care: a scoping review

Objective: to map the available evidence on the healthcare experiences of trans people in hospital settings. Method: a scoping review guided by the JBI methodology and reported according to the PRISMA-ScR. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, EMBASE, LILACS, BDENF, and gray literature sources, including 18 studies published between 2016 and 2023. Results: the experiences of trans people in hospital settings were marked by prejudice, discrimination, disrespect for chosen names, and lack of professional preparedness, particularly in general and non-specialized hospital services, revealing care-related and institutional weaknesses. Studies conducted in specialized services more frequently described positive experiences, especially regarding welcoming practices and interdisciplinary care. Conclusion: the experiences of trans people in hospital care are characterized by structural, relational, and institutional barriers in general hospital services and, in specialized services, by more positive experiences regarding welcoming practices, respect for chosen names, and interdisciplinary care, highlighting the need to improve hospital services to provide trans-inclusive care.
